Thailand
Back to Phuket- Patong Beach
After a fun day at the Phi Phi Islands, back to Patong we went and checked into our second resort, Deevana Patong. This resort is just beautiful! They were even advertised in one of our airline's magazines. We were so thrilled to be staying at such an awesome place for a great price. After unloading our stuff, showering the salt and sand off our bodies, we crashed and ended up taking a long nap.
We awoke at midnight and walked the streets of Patong in search of some food. As the lady barbecued my chicken breast and H's chicken 'bum', which he thought she misspoke and meant, 'thigh', we saw our first 'katoy' (ladyboy) of the trip.
The ladyboy was walking around going up to random men and linking her arms through theirs, escorting them down the street. The first man refused, wasn't his thing, I guess. She went up to an older European couple and started asking the woman some questions. The woman shook her head and they walked away from the ladyboy. Then, H and I see the ladyboy grab a blond haired boy-- he had to be no more than 16 or 17 yrs old-- and plant a big wet kiss on his mouth. They continued making out for a couple more seconds before the boy, dazed, and unaware of whom he was actually kissing, pulled away as the ladyboy continued walking arm-in-arm with him down the street. Still waiting for our food to cook, we hear the boy say to her, "I can't, I have to go home and sleep." Poor thing, his first kiss just happens to be a guy. At least he's none the wiser.

After getting our food to go, or as the Thais say, "take away", we went to the Irish Pub on bar row to eat our meal and drink some beers. As H bit into his chicken skewers, he found out the hard way that the lady actually pronounced it correctly when she said it was 'chicken bum', and not chicken thigh, but exactly what she meant it to be-- chicken ass!
Grossed out, H didn't eat another bite (and he had bought 2 skewers!). He put it back in the bag and asked the bar girl to throw it away for us. Since he didn't finish his other 'chicken bum', I suggested that he offer it to the bar girl instead. He thought it was offensive to offer uneaten food to other people, and I admit he had a point. But, not until he saw them looking through the bag, pulling out the chicken bum and eating it, did we realize that I was right about the starving factor out here in Thailand. Well, at least someone enjoyed the 'bum'.
After drinking, we got hungry again, and since H still hadn't eaten a filling meal, we went back to the food stalls to get more barbecue. This time, we met some New Zealanders staying out here to open a guesthouse and they were totally sloshed. The really beefy New Zealander dug into his chicken, and in between bites, tears off some of the meat and offers it to us. We politely decline. We were hungry, but we'd rather wait. Anyhow, after talking to them for a bit, we took our food and resumed our bar hopping.
Back to our fear of tuk tuks/no seat belts in taxis/renting mopeds, we happen to witness an accident at 2am no less, especially when the streets were empty. A moped driver and a van collide and luckily, the only thing that got broken was the headlight on the moped and the motorist's shoe. We don't know the extent of his foot damage, but since we didn't see any blood, we assume he got out unscathed. Since being in Thailand, we've already witnessed 4 accidents! That's quite a bit considering the short length of our stay.
