Patagonia: El Calafate and Perito Moreno Glaciar
El Calafate is a couple of hours north of Puerto Natales and on the Argentine side of the border. Because we had no radio reception, we decided to buy a some (very expensive) CDs from PN. We ended up with The Beatles Remix Album and The Best of Queen - we listened to these over and over and over! The road trip was really fun but I ended up with Queen stuck in my head for the rest of our Patagonian adventure.
Although we were in the same region, you can really feel the difference once you cross the Chile/Argentine border. El Calafate is a really touristy town but there were heaps of nice bars and felt a little more ´happening´though I would have been bored if we stayed any longer than we did (which was 2 nights and 1 day).
We went to a restaurant to have a parilla . . .
The next day, we drove ourselves to the Perito Moreno glaciar.
I don´t quite know how to explain Perito Moreno glaciar and the photos don´t do justice at all. It is one of the few ´non-retreating´ glaciars. At the terminus it is about 5km wide and is about 60m above the water. Huge chunks of ice fall off the glaciar regularly making a huge noise. All these ice chunks (I don´t think they are technically icebergs but that is what they look like) float on the lake. It is quite spectacular.
