Round the world in 90 days!
The Land of Smiles
Julius and I thoroughly enjoyed our short time in Thailand. Bangkok was a little stinky and very hot but we were definitely expecting that.
The first - and only - day we went exploring Bangkok was wear-a-yellow-tshirt-for-my-King day. This whole monarchy thing can be a little hard to swallow, especially when messages like LONG LIVE THE KING come up on your mobile phone.
We managed to spend our whole time in Bangkok jetlagged with no map, guide book or any clue where we were staying or where anything was in relation to us. After walking around aimlessly in the heat, we saw a canal boat and jumped on with no idea where it would take us.
The boat. The blue thing on the sides (sort of)stops the foul water from spraying in people's faces.
Once we jumped off the boat we of course had no idea where we were, so continued wandering aimlessly. We jumped into a tuk-tuk who took us to a bunch of places and kept dropping us outside the tailor and jewellery shops which eventually got a little tiresome.
After a confusing and disorienting few hours on the tuk-tuk we asked to be taken back to the canal boat which we took back to the area we were staying in (which I now think is called Pratunam). We tried to do a bit of shopping but jetlag got the better of us and the heat and crowds were way too much.
That night, we jumped in a taxi and asked to be taken to Khao San Road (wherever that is). We weren't feeling too adventurous and it was the only place I could remember others talking about. The main thing was that we knew there would be plenty of bars there. We found a little strip of reggae bars where I drank Thai whiskey and used an Asian style toilet for the first time.
We had a great time in Bangers. We really weren't there long enough to get a proper sense of the place but it has certainly whet our apetite - we will come back one day!
