My first attempt to climb the Zugspitze

Travel time: August 2005  |  by valesca schaefer

My uncle Alexander had invited me to climb Germanys highest mountain with him. We had then arranged a date which turned out to be the worst we could have chosen: the whole area was flooded!

We left Frankfurt early on Monday morning and headed towards the Alps. Arriving in Ehrwald (Austria) around noon we first had lunch. It had been raining for quite a while and the weatherforecast in the tourist information said that it wouldn't get better before Tuesday afternoon.

Regardless of the prospects we decided to start hiking up the mountain. The path first winded itself up the ski slopes before reching a cirque.

Finally a fixed rope route lead through the cliffs to the Wiener-Neustaedter hut (2216m above sealevel).

I didn't care that it was raining all the time - I was getting wet by sweating anyway...

The guard at the hut instantly lit a fire in the stove for us to dry our clothes. Some time later two other guys arrived, father and son, that had the same plan.

na, that's not where we slept

We ordered some tea and hot soup for dinner and went to bed some time later. It was still raining nonstop...
