Exploring a new continent

Travel time: March - June 2010  |  by Dominik Weber

13 May Uyuni

It might be possible that this chapter about Uyuni could be the shortest of all. Not only because I stayed there only for one nght, but mainly because there is nothing to see. Uyuni is a little town with 14 000 inhabitans in the middle of a dessert and it is very remote and hence difficult to get there.
The trip from Potosi takes almost 7 hours for a distance of about 200km. The way goes up and down, through the mountains and most of the streets are purely a collection of bigger and smaller stones. But again, the landscape was amazing and we were constantly taking photos. We, that was of course me and Dorien, a Dutch girl that - from my perspective - was about 2,5m tall I met her in the bus where she was sitting next to me (or I to her?) and it will turn out that she will be my travel buddy for the next days. And we had a lot of fun together.
Arriving in Uyuni, we were booking our tour to the Salar de Uyuni for next day (no problem, since there are plenty of agencies again), checked in at a simple hotel, had dinner at an Italian restaurant that beside a big menu only served pizza that evening before we were heading to our rooms. It was already cold and we only expected colder days the next days on our trip.

A green hill in a dessert-like environment.

And from time to time - houses surrounded by nothing but beautiful and harsh landscape.

The trip

Description:
After working for too long without a real break, I decided to go on a long planned backpack trip. After changing the departure date and the destination several times, I decided to go to South America. Starting in Colombia, then Peru and finishing in Bolivia. At least, this was the plan but once on tour, you never know what to expect. This report is for all people asking how I am doing, but also for those who are thinking about doing something similar. I hope I can inspire them.
