Spain: Toledo
April 18, 2004: Day 12
Jene and I got on the train headed for Toledo and it ended at Algador-- its last stop. We continued to sit on the train until the conductor came over to tell us that we had to get off now, and to take a bus into Toledo.
Ah, now that explains why we were the only ones left on the train with a small group of travelers just as confused as we were.
Toledo reminds me very much of my hometown Siena, Italy, with its high stoned walls and city forts. The first thing we noticed was the Puente de Alcantara, and the arches high into the city landscape.
The Tagus River ran right below the bridge. We hiked up to the Castillo de San Servando, had some more jamon y queso sandwiches, then proceeded to explore within the city walls.
We went to Casa Museo del Greco, passed by the Museo de Santa Cruz and the Sinagoga Ma La Blanca, and into the City Hall building where we were shooed out by La Policia. After taking tons of pictures, we went to eat more...you guessed it, paella! We vowed this to be our last paella dish while in Spain.
After lunch and sight-seeing, we were ready to head back into Madrid and explore a bit there as well. It also began to sprinkle as we left. Toledo is definitely a beautiful town, but there's not really much to do unless you're super interested in the medieval period.
